How overtime pay is calculated

MOM defines overtime work as work beyond normal hours, excluding breaks. Standard overtime pay is hourly basic rate x 1.5 x overtime hours. For monthly-rated employees, hourly basic rate is calculated as 12 x monthly basic rate of pay divided by 52 x 44.

  • Monthly-rated employee using MOM's 44-hour weekly denominator.
  • Overtime rate is at least 1.5 times hourly basic rate.
  • Non-workman overtime rate is capped at S$13.60 per hour.
  • Non-workman salary limit: S$2,600 monthly basic salary.
  • Workman salary limit: S$4,500 monthly basic salary.

What this does not cover

  • Managers and executives who are not covered under Part IV.
  • Rest day or public holiday pay calculations.
  • CPF treatment, payroll approval, payslip generation, or salary disbursement.
  • Contractual overtime arrangements that are more favourable than the statutory floor.

Worked examples

S$2,600 non-workman, 4 overtime hours

MOM's non-workman hourly cap is S$13.60. Overtime pay is S$13.60 x 1.5 x 4 hours = S$81.60.

S$3,000 workman, 2.5 overtime hours

Hourly basic rate is S$15.73. Overtime pay is S$15.73 x 1.5 x 2.5 hours, estimated at S$59.00.

More than 72 overtime hours

MOM states that an employee can only work up to 72 overtime hours in a month unless an exemption applies.
